Lima North Middle School's Linda Lehman was named The Lima News' 2007 Newspaper-In-Education (NIE) Teacher of the Year. Lehman, who teaches a multiple handicapped class at North, received the award during a May 31 school celebrations assembly. She is one of 26 teachers around the country to receive the award for finding innovative ways to incorporate the newspaper into their classrooms. Lehman has been at North for five years and uses the newspaper each Monday morning, largely to help pupils learn functional life skills.
"We usually read the newspaper on Monday mornings. It is normal to hear "Oh good, newspapers today!...Oh, I want to see the Sports page! ...I want to see the comics!...Let me check out the TV guide! Hey, I'm looking for a new car this time!" etc. And I must admit that “Newspaper day” is my favorite day for reading too! There is such a variety of things to do...This is probably my fifth year to use NIE and it is by far the best motivation and real life experience I could ever find."
-Linda Lehman, Lima North Middle School
"Students really look forward to receiving The Lima News. They love the student page and reading various articles. The news articles have helped greatly in 'broadening their horizons' in this everchanging world."
-Christine A. Graham, Unity Elementary School, Lima
"Students finish a homework assignment in study hall, then pull out their copy of The Lima News and read the paper. What a great tool for improving comprehension and vocabulary."
-Brad Leis, Ottawa-Glandorf High School
"The newspapers are a huge asset in my classroom. Students will pick up the newspapers and read them and then they discuss current events among themselves. One mother told me that she is impressed that her son reads the newspaper at home and then talks to her about different things that are going on. I believe this program will have lasting positive effects on my students."
-Angie Shellabarger, Lincolnview High School, Van Wert
